Bus Trip to the Paw Paw Tunnel
Save the date, June 15, for a bus trip by the Friends of the Union Canal Tunnel Park. The main destination will be the Paw Paw Tunnel in Maryland, which is 1,118 feet long. That’s about the same length as our navigable canal in the Park! The Paw Paw Tunnel on the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal was built to bypass the Paw Paw bends. Although it was originally planned to be built in two years, it took twelve years to complete. The tunnel has no light except for the natural sunlight from both ends, which almost disappears in the middle. Those planning to walk through the tunnel should bring a flashlight and wear comfortable shoes. There is a handrail along the way.
Seeds of History
New and previous editions of Seeds of History are accessible online, using the instructions sent to your email address. If you prefer to receive the paper version via snail mail (US postal) service, call the office to be sure you’re on the mailing list. But remember, less paper and postage means less expense to the Society, and every bit helps us and the environment!
